Apple CarPlay

As if we’re not already doing enough craziness while driving, you can now browse the Internet in your car. On a more serious note, later this summer, Apple will be rolling out its new CarPlay gadget on select models of Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo cars, with future commitments from Toyota, Jaguar, Ford, Chevrolet, and a few other car manufacturers.

Apple CarPlay is the new accessory that mirrors an iPhone’s apps and functions through a car’s dashboard. The CarPlay screen will look the same on each vehicle, but the control models will vary.

For example, the Mercedes C-class concept car may have indirect COMAND controller, but Volvo may use a touch screen. CarPlay functions will probably be accessed using Siri voice command. This means safer driving while using your iPhone in your car.

The Volvo concept car at the show with CarPlay used a touch screen, but the C-class had Mercedes-Benz’s indirect COMAND controller. All of the CarPlay functions in this demonstration were accessed using Siri voice command and the COMAND dial set into the car’s console.

How to use Apple CarPlay with your iPhone

CarPlay takes the things that you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them on your car’s built-in display. When you connect your iPhone to CarPlay, you can get turn-by-turn directions, make calls, send and receive messages, listen to music, and more.
